Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your confidential letter No. 237/25 of the 17th September, enquiring whether consignments of

Morphia Hydrochlor shipped to us by the 8.8. "Mentor" (ex s.3. "Haruna Maru" and "Havestein") and s.8. "Adrastus" (ex 8.3. "Amazon Maru") had been sold,

and if the proceeds had been credited to the Government of the Straits Settlements.

2. In reply I have to state that, from

correspondence transmitted to us by the Colonial

Office, we understood that the drugs in question were consigned to us for delivery to the Home Office, who were to dispose of them and retain the proceeds,

refunding the expenses incurred in the seizure.

In this connection we would invite attention to the

Secretary of State's telegram of the 4th July 1975

to the Officer Administering the Government of the

Straits Settlements.

In the circumstances, no steps have

been taken to obtain payment of the proceeds of the
